When thinking about buying a leather bag, be it a handbag, a backpack, a briefcase or perhaps a holdall you have to consider what your motive is. Are you trying to buy a bag to match the latest fashions or are you looking for a piece of quality handmade leather that will last a lifetime?
If like us, you expect to be able to use the leather bag for the foreseeable future then our range is perfect for you. We don't believe in making items that fall apart in a matter of a few weeks. We believe that time should be invested in all aspects of the manufacture of an item that should be carried with pride for many years to come.
Initially we hand select the leather hides that are used to fashion the bag. For handbags, only the finest selections are used to cut into the individual pieces that make up the article. For holdalls and backpacks that look better with a slightly more rugged leather the selection is made accordingly. Then our craftsmen work their magic and transform the leather into the finished product, paying great attention to detail so that the stitching is straight and even and the lining is without creases.
The leather that we use, known as vaqueta, is handtanned using a process that has been handed down through generations of families from a specific area of Colombia to the north of Bogota. Using only cattle that have grazed upon the high pastures (this avoids much of the mosquitoes that are found at higher temperatures), the hides retain their natural marking and characteristics that make each bag unique. We feel that is important to know that your bag came from a living animal that roamed free and as such your bag will show scarrings and markings that tell its history.
This same leather matures as you use your bag, becoming softer and gaining a beautiful patina or shine. Whereas may cheap leather bags or synthetic bags only look old and scuffed as the years pass by, our bags actually look better the more you use them. It still surprises us when we pull out one of our first samples from nearly ten years ago and see the colour and shine that it has attained.
